Halcyon’s Gravity Well wins Platinum at Mondial de la Bière

Top honour at Montréal’s renowned annual international beer competition goes to sour red ale from local brewery Halcyon Barrel House

Halcyon Barrel House’s sour red ale Gravity Well has been honoured with the top award at renowned international beer competition Mondial de la Bière. Gravity Well received the Platinum award as part of the Greg Noonan MBeer Contest, which is organized under the umbrella of the Mondial de la Bière of Montréal. This is the 13th edition of the contest, in which a Platinum medal for the best beer is awarded, as well as 10 Gold medals to the runners up. The winners were chosen by a jury of international beer experts. Mondial de la Bière took place June 6-9, 2018.

“I’ve attended Mondial de la Bière off and on for about a dozen years now, and I am a big fan of their approach to the beer competition. Having all the beer styles compete in one pool, with a very limited number of awards given out, is refreshingly different,” says Halcyon Brewmaster Bryce McBain. “It was actually on the way to Mondial that Steve (Beauchesne, co-founder of Beau’s Brewery) and I decided to start Halcyon as part of the Beau’s family, so it’s pretty cool two years later winning Platinum at this event.”

Halcyon Barrel House released its first blend of Gravity Well in fall 2017. The recipe is a rendition of a Flanders Red Ale, a style of sour beer traditionally brewed in Belgium. To create Gravity Well, Halcyon ferments a base red ale in red wine barrels, and then ages it in those barrels for various lengths of time. As the barrels take on different flavours, the in-house supply is custom-blended for each batch of Gravity Well. The beer pours a deep red colour, and offers an aroma that is noticeably malty with a sweet tang, along with stone fruit notes and a hint of wine. Flavours are tart with cherry and wine, and slight alcohol warmth.

This award is the fourth for Halcyon Barrel House since launching in May 2017. Last month, one of its limited releases, Waking Dreams, won Silver in the Belgian-Style Sour Ale – Fruit Lambic category at the Canadian Brewing Awards. In January 2018 Halcyon was named 4th Best New Brewery in the World by RateBeer.com, and Brett I.P.A., Infinity Mirror won a 2017 World Beer Award in the Experimental Beer category. Halcyon brews in and operates out of Vankleek Hill, Ontario, as part of the Beau’s family.

Flagship LCBO stores in major centres in Ontario currently have Gravity Well available, and it can be purchased for home delivery anywhere in that province from LCBO.com. It is of course available at the Beau’s Tap Room, which also has Halcyon’s sour gold Shifting Sands: Raspberry and anniversary blend Year One. Halcyon Barrel House beer is available in Québec at select craft beer retailers and craft-friendly establishments, and occasionally the rest of Canada.
